Astringents, do not, however relieve the pain present in the affected area, and thus you may have to take addition measures along with remedy to get total relief.

Protectants

Protectants, as the name suggests, form a protective layer on top of the hemorrhoidal tissue that prevents it hemorrhoid chaffing due to water loss. This also helps in reducing the inflammation and keeps the symptoms in control. Example of this hemorrhoidal remedy includes ingredients like aluminum hydroxide (found in gels), mineral oil, glycerin (a common hydrator), kaolin, cocoa butter, and petrolatum.

Vasoconstrictors

Vasoconstrictors have an anesthetic effect and numb the hemorrhoidal tissue. These creams act by constricting the blood vessels in the hemorrhoidal tissue thereby reducing the inflammation. This further leads to relief from the discomfort, itching, swelling and general discomfort that people with hemorrhoids suffer from. Vasoconstrictors, however, should be avoided by people with high blood pressure. This is because when the chemicals found in these products get absorbed by the body, it may lead to certain side effects like increase in blood pressure and abnormal heart beat and so on. Ingredients like Resorcinol and Alcloxa are kerolytic agents that help reduce the itching, swelling and sensitivity that occurs in both internal and external hemorrhoids.

Antipruritics

Antipruritics like Menthol, camphor, and juniper can provide temporary relief from the symptoms associated with the hemorrhoidal tissue. This is possible because these products divert the pain sensation by introducing another sensation in that area. The all-natural base products like HemCare also provide the same kind of relief from the itching, pain and discomfort. Before using any of these remedies, it is essential to research the safety of these products and the possible side effects.

Local Anesthetics

Benzocaine, Dibucaine, Benzyl alcohol, and Lidocaine fall into the category of anesthetics that helps reduce the pain associated with hemorrhoidal tissue. These chemicals acts by blocking the nerves that transmit the sensation of pain to your brain, and hence proved relief from the pain associated with bleeding from the lacerated hemorrhoidal tissue. Local anesthetics work best for external hemorrhoids that are more painful than other types.
