Treating Internal Hemorrhoids

Medicine for Internal Hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids that develop inside the anal and rectal canals are known as internal hemorrhoids. Also known as internal hemroids, this condition is not easily noticeable and detectable only when the hemorrhoids start protruding out of the anus. Once it protrudes outside the anus, it is referred to as prolapsed hemorrhoids. Bleeding may also occur in these hemorrhoidal tissues and called bleeding hemroids. The main cause of internal and external hemorrhoids is excessive strain on the veins in the area surrounding the rectum and anus.

Treatment of the various conditions of hemorrhoids depends on the extent and severity of the condition. The medicines available for the treatment to internal hemorrhoids are of different types – prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, herbal remedies and dietary measures.

Dietary Changes to Treat Internal Hemorrhoids

A fibre-rich diet is one of the best ways of avoid developing an internal hemorrhoid. Fibre in the diet helps regular and normal bowel movement and thus avoids undue pressure on the veins in that area. Foods such as fresh fruits and vegetables, and products made of whole grains are highly rich in fibre and should be included in your daily diet. Another way of incorporating healthy fiber is by taking daily supplements of commercial fibre.

Fiber also contains healthy antioxidants that boosts the body’s immunity and neutralizes free radicals in the body. Dietary fibre supplements also contain a substance called flavanoids which reduce the inflammation in internal hemorrhoids. Daflon is one such nutritional supplement that aids in reducing symptoms caused due to development of internal hemorrhoids.

Over-the Counter Medicine for Internal Hemorrhoids

Many treatments for internal hemorrhoids are also available as over-the-counter drugs. These bring relief temporarily and alleviate symptoms like itching, inflammation, and discomfort associated with internal hemorrhoids. Over the counter hemorrhoid creams or ointments also reduce itchiness. Since most of these ointments contain harmful corticosteroids that can adversely affect your skin, you have to be careful and not use it for longer periods of time. The other ointments that are available offer relief by numbing the skin and improving overall sensation.

Try hemorrhoid ointments that are safe for long term use. The creams containing 5% licodaine is recommended for hemorrhoid treatment, as it reduces the pain and other symptoms associated with internal hemorrhoids. Other over-the-counter medications recommended for internal hemorrhoids are Anusal, Colace, Surfak and medicated wipes.

Home or Herbal Remedies for Internal Hemroids

Ingredients such as Aloe Vera, Witch Hazel, Butcher’s Broom extract, Dandelion tincture, and Psyllium found in herbal creams also provides relief from hemorrhoids. The effectiveness of such remedies in treating internal hemorrhoids depends on the severity of the condition and on your body. However, it is always a good idea to consult a doctor before trying any of these remedies especially if you are pregnant or suffer from cardiovascular diseases.
